Although similar in appearance to athletic tape, Kinesiology tape serves a different purpose. It is primarily used to aid in motion and alleviate pain and spasms. In contrast, athletic tape is used for support and to restrict movement, typically due to existing pain. The composition of kinesiology tape allows for flexibility and movement, while athletic tape is relatively rigid. Kinesiology tape provides benefits such as improving lymph transport and increasing circulation, whereas athletic tape tightens and restricts circulation. The exact mechanism of how kinesiology tape works is still controversial.

One theory suggests that it balances the neural circuitry in muscles, tendons, joints, and skin, reducing pain and decreasing swelling. Additionally, it is believed to enhance muscle performance and function. Another theory suggests that kinesiology tape can realign joint positions and remodel collagen tissues, including scar tissue. This tape gently lifts the superficial layers of skin, creating a space between the skin, fascia, and underlying tissues. This space promotes better circulation and lymphatic drainage, effectively reducing swelling and inflammation.

2018 study found that using Kinesio taping with manual lymphatic drainage improved lymphatic fluid congestion and blood circulation after total knee replacement surgery. This combination resulted in pain relief and improved functional outcomes following the procedure. Overall, kinesiology tape offers various benefits and is effective in certain clinical scenarios.
